Rachel Hockaday (born July 10, 1990) is an American athlete who plays volleyball for the Iowa State Cyclones as an Outside Hitter. She wears #3. Rachel is the daughter of John and Cheryl Hockaday and has three bothers, Jack, Joe and Luke. Luke has played quarterback for Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Hockaday attended Maroa - Forsyth Senior High School and majored in marketing.
As a four year starter at Maroa-Forsyth High School, Hockaday led the Trojans to three regional championships and a third-place finish at state in 2007. She was a Top 150 selection by PrepVolleyball.com. She was first-team All-State as a senior and Honorable Mention All-State as a junior. Rachel was also the Macon County Player of the Year in 2007 and a three-time first-team all-county honoree. As a three-year captain she led the team to a 69-3 record her final two seasons, and she is the school record holder with 1,158 career kills, including 568 as a senior. Rachel had a career-best 40 kills in sectional championship win over Pana.
Hockaday originally signed to play college ball with the Ohio Bobcats, but was granted release and played for Iowa State instead, after Bobcat coach Geoff Carlston moved on to coach at Ohio State, citing that she wanted to play for a coach that recruited her, despite it being late into her club season. Hockaday entered the 2010 season as a preseason All-Big 12 pick after averaging 3.22 kills and 2.96 digs per set in 2009 and earning All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades. However, in the Cyclones’ season opener against Florida, Hockaday suffered a knee injury twelve points into the match, that ended her season. Among Hockadays awards- Preseason All-Big 12 Team (2010); All-Big 12 Honorable Mention (2009); Big 12 All-Freshman Team (2008); CVU.com Rising Star (2008); Diet Coke Classic All-Tournament Team (2009); Iowa State Invitational All-Tournament Team (2008).
